From Jimboomba to the Northern Territory

Earlier this year, Year 12 student Taj Croker undertook an extraordinary work experience placement at Newcastle Waters, a remote cattle station located 714 kilometres south of Darwin and over 2,700 kilometres from his hometown of Jimboomba.

Taj’s journey into the agricultural industry began through his active involvement in the school’s agriculture program and Cattle Show Team. With encouragement from teacher Mr Goss and several 2023 graduates, Taj applied for a Certificate III in Agriculture. He was supported throughout the process by the school’s Pathways Officer, Mrs Blissett, who provided guidance on balancing school and work commitments and managed the paperwork for his school-based traineeship.

Following a successful interview with Nat McGhee, manager of Nindooinbah, Taj was accepted into a two-year Certificate III traineeship. At the end of 2024, Nat offered Taj the opportunity to work in the Northern Territory. With the support of Nat and Anna Cochrane, manager of Newcastle Waters, the arrangements were swiftly finalised.

Reflecting on the experience, Taj described it as “unforgettable” and said it had opened his eyes to the vast opportunities within the agricultural sector. He hopes to continue working across Australia—and potentially internationally—with the long-term goal of running his own cattle station.

Taj also offered advice to younger students considering a school-based traineeship or apprenticeship: “Take every opportunity that comes your way. Build your resume with certificates and hands-on experience. Most importantly, find a job you love so much that it doesn’t feel like work—because you only live once.”

Emmaus College Jimboomba continues to support students in pursuing real-world experiences that align with their passions and career aspirations.
